Types,Designs and Examples of Sockets.

Every day, we rely on them without a second thought. Sockets, we use them to power our appliances, lamps and to charge our phones.

A socket is a device or outlet where you can plug in an electric device to provide power.

There are two types of sockets; switched and non-switched

• Switched sockets – Have an integrated switch to control power supply to the socket. This means that you can turn the power on or off using the switch on the socket.

It is convenient because it allows one to control the connected devices without having to unplug them.

Below is an example of a universal switched socket.

  • Non-switched sockets – Are electrical outlets that do not have an on or off switch. They are designed to provide a constant source of power. They are commonly used for appliances that are intended to be continuously powered.

They are disconnected by unplugging devices. A shaver unit is an example of non-switched sockets.

Sockets are mounted in different ways:

• Wall-mounted sockets -They are installed directly in to the wall. They are a common and convenient option for providing electrical outlets in homes and buildings.

Typically, they have a faceplate that covers the electrical wiring and provides a safe and accessible way to plug in electric devices.

• Flush mount sockets -They are installed directly into the wall, so it sits flush with the surface.

They create a clean and seamless look as the socket is not protruding from the wall.

A flash-mounted socket can either be switched or non-switched.

• Surface mount sockets -They are installed on the surface of a wall or any other flat surface. They are not recessed in the walk like flush-mount sockets.

Are easy to install and convenient if you do not want to cut into the wall.

Let us look into a few common sockets:

 Single socket

They are the simplest and the most common type of socket. They are designed to provide a single access point for plugging in devices and appliances, serving as the entry point for electrical power. Are used both for commercial and residential purposes

 Single socket with USB port

Single sockets have evolved to meet the demands of modern technology; they have been improvised with a built-in USB port which allows you to power up your devices without the need of bulky adapters or extra charging stations. Single sockets with USB ports are convenient because they offer dual functionality and save on space by reducing the number of accessories needed for device charging. Are used both for commercial and residential purposes

Double socket

Also known as twin socket, is a type of electrical outlet that consists of two sets of receptacles for plugging in devices or appliances.

A double socket has added advantages compared to a single socket:

• Allows for the use of multiple devices or appliances.

• Offers great power distribution capacity compared to a single socket, making it suitable for areas with higher demand for electrical access.

• Combines two outlets in a single unit, saving on space on walls compared to installing two separate single sockets.

Double socket with USB port

A double socket with a built-in USB port is an improvised version of the double socket. Has two USB ports which allow for the simultaneous charging of two USB-powered devices alongside the functionality of the standard electrical outlets.

Apart from the added advantage of the USB port, it has similar advantages as the double socket without USB.

 Cooker unit

A cooker unit socket, also known as a cooker switch/cooker outlet/cooker point, is an electrical outlet specifically designed for connecting electric cookers or stoves to the electrical supply.

These sockets are typically rated for higher current loads to accommodate the power requirements for cooking appliances.

 Shavers unit

A shaver unit, often referred to as a shaver outlet, is a specific type of electrical socket designed for use with electrical razors and other low-power personal grooming appliances.

They are commonly found in bathrooms and are specially designed to provide a low voltage and low current output. Shavers sockets are typically dedicated to powering shavers only

 15 Amp socket

An electrical socket that is designed to handle a maximum current of 15 amperes. Amp is the short form of amperes. This type of socket is commonly used for appliances that require higher power such as air conditioners and heavy-duty equipment.

It provides a higher current capacity compared to standard sockets, allowing for the safe and efficient operation of these devices
